This is not about executive development.
As a senior executive, you’re experienced, intelligent, educated, and effective. But often, because we get caught up in the day-to-day demands of our work, we only get to think in terms of modifying existing systems when it comes to increasing the results of our organization. We tend to see things a certain way and become blind to other strategies and perspectives.
It’s analogous to a fly trying to escape a room by flying at a pane of glass. He can see the goal. It’s right there on the other side of the glass.
So he flies against the glass trying to break through. When that doesn’t work, he flies against a different part of the glass. When that doesn’t work, he tries flying harder at the glass. He won’t give up because he KNOWS he can reach his goal.
So he remains persistent. He tries flying at different parts of the window. He tries flying harder. He tries flying faster. All to no avail. He remains unable to break through. He is single-minded in the pursuit of his goal, but he’s become attached to how he’ll achieve it. He has blinders on. And unfortunately, his attachment to his process – his blindness in his thinking – eventually results in his death.
The real truth is that he was blind to the fact that only a few feet away was an open door that he could easily have flown through to reach his goal. If only he had shifted his belief, his thinking, his strategy, and his actions, he would have succeeded.
The only way to break out of a pattern is to get outside perspective. You must begin seeing things in a different way in order to generate significantly different results. Having someone point out what's been overlooked or unexamined is a crucial step in escaping circular thinking.
